Compression therapy is a treatment method used to improve circulation, reduce swelling, and prevent or manage various conditions related to blood flow and fluid retention. It involves the use of elastic garments or devices that apply pressure to specific areas of the body, usually the legs or arms, to help promote venous return (blood flow back to the heart) and reduce fluid buildup. Compression therapy is commonly used for conditions like:
- Chronic venous insufficiency (CVI) – where veins have difficulty sending blood back to the heart, leading to swelling, varicose veins, or ulcers.
- Lymphedema – a condition where lymph fluid builds up in the body, often causing swelling, particularly in the limbs.
- Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) – a blood clot in the veins that can lead to swelling and other complications.
- Post-surgical recovery – to reduce swelling and promote healing after surgery.
- Sports recovery – used by athletes to reduce muscle soreness and prevent swelling after intense physical activity
Compression garments range from simple compression stockings to more advanced pneumatic devices that apply controlled pressure. These garments are available in different pressure levels, measured in mmHg, with higher numbers representing stronger compression.
The primary benefits of compression therapy include:
- Improved circulation: Helps prevent blood from pooling in the lower extremities and reduces the risk of clot formation.
- Reduced swelling: Encourages fluid drainage from swollen tissues, preventing discomfort and further health complications.
- Pain relief: Provides support to the muscles and tissues, which can reduce pain associated with swelling and poor circulation.
Should not wear if someone has:
- Peripheral Artery Disease: Compression stockings can restrict blood flow for people who have PAD, this is when the arteries in the body narrow.
- Heart Failure: The workload on your heart increases when compression stockings are used.
- Skin Infections: Stocking can aggravate open wounds, sores, and skin infections.
What size fits best:
- Size ranges from Small to 2XL
- Can go bigger upon request
- Must be measured in-store and up to three hours after getting out of bed so the legs do not swell!
It's important to use compression therapy under the guidance of a healthcare provider, especially if you have underlying health conditions like peripheral artery disease, as inappropriate use can sometimes cause harm
