Medicare Inexpensively/routinely purchased items (rent/purchase process) and capped rentals As applicable, Company will advise patient that he/she may either rent or purchase inexpensive or routinely purchased durable medical equipment (DME), and of the purchase option for capped rental DME.
Medicare routinely pays monthly rental fees for a period not to exceed 13 months, after which ownership is transferred to the Medicare beneficiary, for the following types of equipment: Hospital beds, wheelchairs, support surfaces (alternating pressure pumps), nebulizers, CPAP devices, patient lifts, and trapeze bars. After ownership is transferred, it is the beneficiary’s responsibility to arrange for repairs or services.
For inexpensive or routinely purchased items: Equipment in this category can be purchased or rented; However, the total amount paid for monthly rentals cannot exceed the fee schedule purchase amount. Examples of this type of equipment include Canes, walkers, commode chairs, crutches, low pressure and positioning equalization pads, home blood glucose monitors, seat lift mechanisms, pneumatic compressors (lymphedema pumps), bedside rails, and traction equipment.
Patients are offered the option to rent or purchase these items, as indicated on the signed delivery ticket. Although Medicare permits either the rental or purchase of the following items, the Company chooses to only sell the following types of items: Standard Commodes, walkers, canes and seat lift mechanisms.
Additional Information regarding Rental Equipment
All rental equipment remains the property of the Company that retains title and is the owner of the equipment. It is the responsibility of the customer/guardian/ estate to contact the Company to pick up equipment when it is no longer needed, or if/when the patient/customer is admitted to a long-term care facility or hospital. Any lost or severely abused equipment will be billed as a sale to the customer/guardian /estate
